Words With Friends uses a 104-tile pool. While tiles remain in the bag, every draw injects uncertainty. The moment the bag count hits 0, that uncertainty dies. No refills. No mystery pulls. Only two private racks and a public board remain.

Official end conditions that matter here:

  1. One player empties their rack while the bag is empty — game ends on that out-play.
  2. After the last tile is played, the opponent loses points equal to the sum of their remaining tile values, and that same amount is awarded to the player who went out.
  3. The match can also end after three successive non-scoring turns (for example, repeated passes), provided the score is not 0–0.

The Perfect Information Threshold

Define the threshold as the first turn where:

Bag tiles remaining = 0

At that instant, the match crosses into perfect information relative to tile identity:

  • Every unseen letter must sit on the opponent’s rack.
  • Your tracking sheet can reconstruct that rack exactly.
  • Future “luck” is no longer a variable — only sequencing, hooks, and blockade quality remain.

Doctrine: When the bag icon shows 0, stop “playing words.” Start solving a closed system.


Rack Deduction Formula

Once the bag is empty:

Opponent's Hidden Rack = Total Tile Pool − (Played Tiles + Your Current Rack)

Where:

  • Total Tile Pool = the full Words With Friends 104-tile distribution (including 2 blanks).
  • Played Tiles = every letter already committed to the board (track blanks as blanks, not as their assigned letters, for inventory purposes).
  • Your Current Rack = the tiles you hold now.

Because both players hold at most seven tiles and the bag is empty, the residual inventory is precisely the opponent’s hand. Digital tile trackers accelerate this. The algebra is identical if you track manually.

Worked skeleton:

  1. Start from master counts (E×13, A×9, …, Q×1, blanks×2, etc.).
  2. Subtract board occupancy tile-by-tile.
  3. Subtract your seven (or fewer) rack tiles.
  4. The remainder is opponent’s exact multiset.

The Out-Play Bonus — double swing math

Zynga’s Words With Friends endgame rule is unambiguous:

  • Opponent loses S points, where S = sum of face values on their remaining tiles.
  • You gain those same S points.

Relative score movement from the bonus alone:

Net Swing from remaining tiles = +S (to you) + S (taken from them) = 2S

Full out-play valuation:

Net Swing = Your Final Play Score + 2 × Sum of Opponent's Tile Values

Proof example:

Opponent trapped with Q (10) + V (5) + I (1)S = 16.

Bonus swing = 2 × 16 = 32

If your out-play scores 12:

Net Swing = 12 + 32 = 44

A flashy 30-point play that fails to go out — and lets them go out instead — can lose the match even from a lead. The out-play bonus is not a footnote. It is often the largest single equity event of the late game.

Endgame Value Volatility

When a power tile is trapped in hand at bag-empty, its true cost is the hidden penalty — the double swing it creates if the opponent goes out while you still hold it (or the swing you capture if they hold it).

Use your app’s exact point list; Words With Friends letter pricing differs from Scrabble (notably V at 5, L/N/U at 2, H commonly at 3).

Volatility rule:
A tile’s endgame importance equals 2 × face value × playability constraint. An unplayable V can be deadlier than a flexible 8-point X.


Run this tree the instant the bag displays 0. No exceptions.

Reconstruct the opponent’s exact hand:

  1. Open your tile-tracking sheet (or mental master list).
  2. Subtract every board tile from the 104-tile pool.
  3. Subtract your current rack.
  4. Record the residual multiset as Opponent Hidden Rack.
  5. Flag blanks separately — a blank has 0 penalty value but infinite shape flexibility.

Output required before any play:

  • Exact letters they hold.
  • Sum S of their face values.
  • Which of their tiles are “stuck” without specific board vowels/hooks.

If your scan is incomplete, you are still playing a midgame. Fix the scan first.


Ask: who can empty first?

Count open hooks that actually fit their letters, not abstract empty cells. A board full of A-hooks is useless to an opponent holding W V C J with no vowels.


Let:

  • M = your current score − opponent’s current score (positive if you lead).
  • P = your candidate play score.
  • S = sum of opponent’s remaining face values if you go out.
  • S_you = sum of your remaining face values if they go out instead.

If you can go out now:

Post-game margin ≈ M + P + 2S

If they would go out next instead:

Post-game margin ≈ M − (their play) − 2S_you

Deficit coverage test:
If you trail (M negative), compute whether P + 2S covers |M|.

Example: trail by 22 (M = −22), out-play scores 8, opponent holds tiles summing to 12:

P + 2S = 8 + 24 = 32
32 > 22 → mathematical win if the out-play lands

If the bonus does not cover the deficit, you need either a higher out-play, a forced opponent pass, or a multi-turn lock — not a random side score.


When the deduced rack contains heavy, low-combinability consonants (V, C, W, J, also Q/X without fit):

  1. List every legal 2-letter hook seat they could use.
  2. List every vowel contact that unlocks their rack.
  3. Occupy or neutralize those seats systematically.
  4. Prefer blocks that also advance your own out-path.
  5. If they are fully paralyzed, force passes / non-scoring turns and then unload.

Blockade success metric:

Legal moves for opponent → 0
Your out-path → intact

That is an un-challengeable board state: not because of dictionary disputes, but because their tiles literally cannot land.


Mission: Empty your rack with tiny plays while creating zero adjacent openings.

Execution roadmap:

  1. Prefer 2-letter and 3-letter overlaps into already dense regions.
  2. Fill both flanks of your play so no new parallel lane appears.
  3. End on low-hook consonants when facing their known flexible tiles.
  4. Accept single-digit scores if Turn-Count Analysis says you are in an out-race.

  2. Offer a low-value hook that fits their rack awkwardly or forces a non-optimal dump.
  3. Ensure the critical out-cell for your last tile is not the bait cell.
  4. After they respond, cash the prepared out-play and trigger 2S.

  1. From Step 1, confirm they lack playable vowels (or lack the exact vowel their consonants need).
  2. Do not open fresh A/E/I/O/U contacts beside their usable consonants.
  3. If a lone board vowel exists that would free them, block adjacency to it.
  4. Optionally leave only consonant-on-consonant dead ends.
  5. When they pass, unload and bank the double swing.

Stuffing principle:

Their dead tiles remain dead only if you refuse to donate oxygen (vowels/hooks).

A known W + O with no open vowel geometry is a prison. Your job is to keep the door locked for one more turn.

State:

  • Bag = 0.
  • You lead by 15.
  • You can score a flashy 35 now, but it leaves an open A hook.
  • You will still hold tiles after the 35-point burn.

  • Bag = 0.
  • You trail by 22.
  • Tile tracking shows opponent holds W and O (plus other dead weight), with no open vowels left that unlock a legal placement for their rack.
  • An open 30-point vanity play exists — but it would create vowel contact that frees them.
  • You have an 8-point defensive block that preserves the vowel drought and keeps your own out-route.

Master line: Refuse 30. Play the 8-point block.

Sequence:

  1. Opponent has no legal move → passes.
  2. You unload your rack on the preserved out-path for 8 points.
  3. Opponent’s remaining face sum S = 8.
  4. Bonus swing = 2 × 8 = 16.

Margin math:
